The inaugural race will be Saturday, June 12th from Freshwater Bay to Port Angeles, WA, 13.5 miles of open-water excitement. Many thanks to Gabe Newton for developing the idea for the event and doing the research on prevailing wind conditions to give us a fast, challenging course.
The race will have two start times:
There will be a mandatory pre-race meeting at 11:15 am with an noon start for the following divisions:
Sea Kayak, Outrigger, SUP
There will be a mandatory pre-race meeting at 11:45 am with a 12:30 am start for the following divisions:
Surfskis, OC2s, OC6s, All Rowers
Gear Requirements: Each participant is required to have in their possession a PFD, have an accessible whistle or other sounding device as well as a bilge pump (decked boats) or bailing device (OCs) and it is highly recommended that you wear a wetsuit or drysuit and carry a VHF radio. We’ll have wetsuits, booties and other gear available for rent at the ORK shop. Note: We highly recommend that you WEAR a PFD at all times while racing.
All racers acknowledge that they understand the serious health and safety risks of open water racing, that they are competent in unassisted self-rescue in open water conditions, and that they will self-assess conditions on race day and withdraw from competition if their inability to handle the conditions may put other paddlers and rescue teams at risk. All race participants will be required to sign a release form.
Registration Details: $50 per person (discounts for boats with three+ paddlers). This includes race entry fee, event tee shirt (if registered by May 31st) and free BBQ meal on Friday night. Sorry, no refunds and you must be present to claim shirts and bag of schwag.
ONLINE REGISTRATION
We’ll be contacting you by email after you register to update you on race preparations and to collect the following information: Make/model of boat, t-shirt size, vegetarian or meat for BBQ, gender, paddling with (other paddlers’ names if entering tandem, triple or OC6)
The Course: The race will start at Freshwater Bay boat launch and finish at Hollywood Beach, downtown Port Angeles (directions below).
Check In Details: You must check in to receive your race number, tee shirt and schwag bag, and to sign the race liability release. You can check in at Olympic Raft & Kayak Friday, June 11th after 4 pm-8 pm. Race day check in will be at Freshwater Bay at 10 am-11 am.
Awards: Awards ceremony begins 90 minutes after the first racer hits the beach. Prizes TBD.
Friday Night BBQ and Raffle: Join ORK in kicking off the weekend with a BBQ on Friday night! Festivities start at 6 pm. Your meal is included with your race entry; additional guests $10. We’ll have a wide array of food and a bonfire. Don’t forget to bring your instruments. Your entry also includes one raffle ticket for loads of cool schwag! You must be present at the Friday night BBQ to win and additional tickets are available for $2 each, Raffle begins at 7:30 pm.
Shuttles: You can park at the Red Lion only if you are staying there. There is parking on the street around the Red Lion which is free. Shuttle fee is $7 per person plus you boat. Please be sure you bring your own pads and straps for hauling your boat on our trailer. Our rig is not much padded. We will ask you to tie your own boat on our trailer, to avoid liability on our part. Register in advance to ensure your spot. Seats are limited.
Gear Discounts: All racers are entitled to 15% off any kayaks or accessories in stock at our retail shop Friday-Sunday, June 11-13. Now there’s a way to save serious money.
ONLINE REGISTRATION
Accommodations: The Red Lion Hotel is the official hotel of this event, which makes sense since it’s 30 feet from the finish line. $119.00 for the Premium Water View rooms or $109.00 for the Standard Non View rooms. Both include the “Roaring Start Breakfast Buffet” for up to two people. Call for a room and ask for the de Fuca Downwind Race discount. (360) 452-9215.
Directions:
To Freshwater Bay boat launch: Go west from Port Angeles on Hwy 101 for approx. five miles. Turn right on Hwy 112 toward Neah Bay. Go 4.5 miles and take a right on Freshwater Bay Road. Go to end of road.
To Hollywood Beach: It is in downtown Port Angeles in front of the Red Lion Hotel and next to the City Pier.
To Olympic Raft & Kayak: From Port Angeles go west on Hwy 101 for 8 miles. Cross Elwha River and take first right onto Lake Aldwell Road. It’s the first place on the left.
