2nd ANNUAL de FUCA DOWNWIND
Sat. June 11th 2011
This is the second annual De Fuca Downwind, the brainchild of paddler Gabe Newton’s research on the Strait’s most reliable Westerlies. The 13-mile course starts at Freshwater Bay County Park, West of Port Angeles. Across 11 gorgeous open miles, with Washington’s Olympic Mountains as a backdrop, racers on surfskis and SUPs, in kayaks and outrigger canoes ride the tailwind all the way to Ediz Hook at the mouth of Port Angeles Harbor… then the real work begins as the last two miles head across the wind to the beach in front of the Red Lion hotel on the waterfront.
Big BBQ, gear raffle from our sponsors, and awards presentation at Olympic Raft & Kayak following the race! your race entry includes the meal, plus a tee shirt and one raffle ticket.
Extra tee shirts – $15 ($20 at the event)
Meals for your guests – $10 (please preregister prior to the event so we can plan the food)
Extra raffle tickets – $5
Gear Requirements: Each participant is required to have in their possession a PFD, have an accessible whistle or other sounding device as well as a bilge pump (decked boats) or bailing device (OCs) and it is highly recommended that you wear a wetsuit or drysuit and carry a VHF radio. We’ll have wetsuits, booties and other gear available for rent at the ORK shop. Note: We highly recommend that you WEAR a PFD at all times while racing.
All racers acknowledge that they understand the serious health and safety risks of open water racing, that they are competent in unassisted self-rescue in open water conditions, and that they will self-assess conditions on race day and withdraw from competition if their inability to handle the conditions may put other paddlers and rescue teams at risk. All race participants will be required to sign a release form.
Gear Discounts: All racers are entitled to 15% off any kayaks or accessories in stock at our retail shop Friday-Sunday, June 10-12. Now there’s a way to save serious money.
