FRIDAY CLINICS
HOW TO SELECT YOUR FIRST KAYAK: (Bill McKenzie) If you are new to kayaking, initial boat selection can be difficult. This on-land clinic will cover how different kayak designs affect performance (stability, speed, maneuverability and tracking) and suggest how this information can help you develop a strategy to choose the right boat for the conditions you plan to paddle in. SEA KAYAKING, GETTING STARTED: (Ken Campbell) This on-land clinic is intended as an overview for novice paddlers or for those who are just curious about what it takes to start kayaking safely and with confidence. This presentation goes past the different types of kayaks available and gives participants a solid introduction to other essential pieces of paddling gear. Bring your questions! Kayaking skills will also be discussed and by the end of the presentation participants will not only have gained a familiarity with the equipment involved in sea kayaking, but also with some of the ways it is used properly. ESKIMO ROLLING: (Les Uhrich) Learn the basic steps for this fun and important skill. If you do not get a roll in this clinic, we will send you home with strategies and insight to help teach yourself. We limit this to two people per one instructor. Required equipment for this clinic includes a sea or river kayak that fits snugly, bulkheads or flotation in the kayak, PFD, paddle, sprayskirt, and wetsuit or drysuit. THE SURF ZONE: (Deb Volturno, John Palmer) With any sort of wave action the zone where the land and ocean meet becomes an exciting place. This clinic is designed to improve boat handling skills necessary in the surf, and introduce landing techniques for a variety of environments. Learn how adjustments to basic strokes, trim, and edging can increase control in the surf. The instructors plan to cover the differences between surfing a sea kayak versus a surf specific boat, discuss safety issues, provide flat water exercises to foster surfing skills and share her enthusiasm for the surf zone. This clinic is open to both sea kayakers and river kayakers with their own equipment. Required equipment includes a kayak with bulkheads or flotation, wetsuit or drysuit, helmet, PFD and sprayskirt. SATURDAY CLINICS
COLD WATER IMMERSION AND HYPOTHERMIA: Knowledge That May Save Your Life: (Dr. Sam Baker) Hypothermia is a paddlers number one concern in the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest. This clinic is a discussion of the symptoms, prevention, self-help, treatment and other aspects of hypothermia/cold water immersion. This information may save your life. INTRODUCTION TO SEA KAYAKING: (Kathy Ruud/TBA) This on-water class will get you started in the amazing sport of sea kayaking. Learn all the basics including how to dress, what equipment you need, how to get into and out of a kayak, basic stroke technique, basic rescues and much more. All equipment is provided including kayak, paddle, pfd (life jacket), wetsuit, booties, and splash jacket. Bring a bathing suit to wear under the wetsuit. Where: Red Lion Pool When: SAT 9am-1pm $40

TOWING SCENARIOS: (Les Uhrich/Diane Uhrich) This is an on-water clinic. What will you do when your paddling partner becomes incapacitated? For many instructors and trip leaders the tow belt may be the most important piece of safety gear you can carry. Without it you may find yourself reaching for your VHF radio or flares when a simple tow could have solved the problem. This clinic will be an introduction to several towing techniques using different scenarios on the water. Practice towing using a variety of methods and towing systems. Bring your own tow belt to this class or come and try one on for the first time. Where: East End Hollywood Beach When: SAT 10am-noon $20

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PADDLE FOR YOU: (Rhonda Schwab) This is an on-land clinic. Your body, your paddling style and the degree of efficiency you want all influence the type of paddle you use. This clinic will give you insights on how to make the best choice for you. We will discuss paddle length, blade size and shape, feathered vs. unfeathered, degree of feather, shaft size, weight, materials, bent or straight shaft, high or low angle, one/two and four piece paddles, spares, blisters, wrist rotation, tendonitis and drip rings. INTERMEDIATE SEA KAYAKING SKILLS: (Les Uhrich/Bill McKenzie) If you have sea kayaked before and have a basic understanding of paddling techniques and rescues. It’s time to add to your skills and take them to the next level. This on-water clinic will help you understand advanced strokes, leaning and edging to turn your kayak, bracing, and advanced rescue skills. Where: East End, Hollywood Beach When: SAT 1pm-5pm $40
KAYAK REPAIR MADE EASY: (Rhonda Schwab) If you have you ever wondered how you would fix a hole in your boat in the middle of nowhere this is the clinic for you! Join Rhonda to learn how to repair your boat – from little dings to big ones – on the water or at home. She will also demonstrate how to apply your own keel strip and provide tips on how to set up an emergency repair kit. Rhonda has been repairing boats for many years and her customers include well known paddlers in our area. Where: The Stage on City Pier When: SAT 2pm-3:30pm $5

INTRODUCTION TO SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding): (TBA) This is an on-water clinic. SUPs are the new craze because it’s so easy to learn! Whether you are paddling flat water for fun and exercise or learning a new way to surf, this is the fastest growing segment of paddlesports. Join Rob in this informative clinic on the basics of stand up paddling. You’ll quickly become comfortable paddling these stable boards. Rob will teach you about the equipment, basic stroke techniques, safety and more. We’ll supply the boards, paddles, PFDs, booties and wetsuits. You bring a bathing suit for under the wetsuit. KAYAK SURFING: (Deb Volturno, John Palmer) This clinic is for experienced boaters with a whitewater or surf specific kayak. Join these pros on the waves to learn the art and etiquette of surfing kayaks as well as defensive strategies for big surf, wave shapes and selection, and how to get the most out of you planing hulled kayak. ON-WATER EMERGENCY SIGNALING AND COMMUNICATION: (Bill McKenzie) This clinic will cover the philosophy of on-water emergency signals. This includes attracting attention, helping people locate you, and the effectiveness of signaling devices for sea kayakers. Devices will be available for inspection as well as discussion on their use in an emergency situation.
