ON LAND CLINICS are in GREEN.

WEEKEND TRIPS ON WASHINGTONS WATER TRAILS: (Sarah Kreuger, Washington Water Trails Assoc. Outreach Director) You could spend a lifetime exploring the network of water trails in Washington State. This presentation will highlight one and two-night trips to destinations on the Cascadia Marine Trail, Northwest Discovery Water Trail, and Willapa Bay Trail. The Cascadia Marine Trail is a network of over 50 campsites established for people traveling Puget Sound by human-powered watercraft. Hear about efforts to preserve and expand this one-of-a-kind water trail. Where: Olympic Room, Red Lion Hotel When SAT 9:00-10:30 $5

LEARNING AND PRACTICING GOOD JUDGEMENT WHEN KAYAKING: (Wayne Horodowich) (This is an on land lecture) How do you learn to make a quality decision in a kayaking emergency? Is your past experience enough to help you when faced with a problem? Do you have difficulties in making tough decisions? This presentation will examine the decision making process and the steps one can follow that will help towards quality decision making in the future. Part of the presentation is reviewing emergency scenarios. Where: Juan de Fuca Room, Red Lion Hotel Time: SAT 9:30-11:00 $5

KAYAK CAMPING WITHOUT A TRACE: (Sarah Kreuger, Washington Water Trails Assoc. Outreach Director) Whether you are just considering an overnight trip, or you are a seasoned camper who wants to refine your skills, this course will offer ideas, techniques, and simple tools to lessen your “paddle print” on sensitive shorelines. The course will emphasize low-impact camping: the high art of recreating without leaving a trace. Topics will include how to prepare for your camping trip, best practices for managing waste, low-impact campfires and campfire alternatives, strategies for avoiding creature-conflicts, and more. Where: Olympic Room, Red Lion Hotel When SAT 11:00-12:30 $5

YOUR BOAT, BODY AND THE BLADE: (Wayne Horodowich) (This is an on land lecture) Paddling a kayak is more than just taking strokes with your paddle. Kayaking is a true marriage of your boat, body and blade. All three must be working together during all aspects of kayaking. We will discuss boat positions and movements, body positions and movements, and closely view how to properly use and manipulate your paddle to get the results you want when kayaking. The class is done in the lecture room so you can see what is happening under the water and inside the kayak when we look at your body, boat and blade working together. Where: Juan de Fuca Room, Red Lion Hotel Time: SAT 11:00-12:30 $5

BEFUDDLED ABOUT BLADDER ISSUES?: (Deb Volturno) For Women Only! Learn about FUDs (Female Urinary Devices) and how to use them to empty your bladder discreetly and with confidence; even while in your kayak! Never again worry about having to find a secluded place to spend 10 minutes removing your wetsuit in order to deal with a full bladder. Be FUDacious! Deb is FUD-trained and FUD-confident. Where: Peninsula Room, Red Lion Hotel Time: SAT 1:30-2:30 $5

CAPSIZE RECOVERIES AND RESCUES: Which one is best for you? (Wayne Horodowich) (This is an on land lecture) Every sea kayaking book has at least one chapter devoted to rescues. Which method should you use in which situation? What is the difference between a capsize recovery and a rescue? How do you get help in an emergency? At the end of the presentation you will have the necessary information to answer these questions for yourself and how to best spend your practice time in the water. INS AND OUTS OF THE SURF ZONE: (Wayne Horodowich) (This is an on land lecture) Going through the surf zone is a necessary part of most sea kayaking. However, for many people it produces anxiety and for good reason. Before entering the surf zone there are many questions that should be asked and answered. The presentation will focus on the techniques, strategies and information one should have to make the surf zone a comfortable and even an enjoyable experience. You will also learn a technique that can be practiced in clam water that will help you in the surf zone. Where: Juan de Fuca Room, Red Lion Hotel Time: 3:00-4:30 $5

Ever wondered if you really need a tarp or how big it should be? What kind of stuff is good to eat on kayak trips? What should I do to prepare for my kayak expedition? Where are some good places to go? What are some options for getting my friends and our kayaks to that destination? This is the way to find out! Believing that kayaking should be fun and not taken too seriously, Les has a collection of slides designed to make you feel the same way. You will not want to miss this! Juan de Fuca Room, Red Lion Hotel Time: SAT 7:00-8:30 $5

ON-WATER CLINICS are BLUE. For these classes you will need the necessary equipment (wetsuit or drysuit, kayak with floatation or bulkheads, paddle, sprayskirt, PFD, bilge pump, paddle float) as well as wet exit experience which is taught throughout the weekend (see description below). THE SURF ZONE: (Deb Volturno, Dave Agnew, John Palmer) With any sort of wave action the zone where the land and ocean meet becomes an exciting place. This clinic is designed to improve boat handling skills necessary in the surf, and introduce landing techniques for a variety of environments. Learn how adjustments to basic strokes, trim, and edging can increase control in the surf. The instructors plan to cover the differences between surfing a sea kayak versus a surf specific boat, discuss safety issues, provide flat water exercises to foster surfing skills and share her enthusiasm for the surf zone. This clinic is open to both sea kayakers and river kayakers. Where: Crescent Beach Time: Sat. 9:30am-12:30am $35 MEET AT REGISTRATION TENT ON HOLLYWOOD BEACH AT 8:30am!!! $35

Carol and Mike will be teaching you many of the intermediate and expert techniques such as the hang draw, draw on the move, bow and stern ruddering, and the low brace turn. This class is about moving the kayak around other than just using forward and reverse strokes. You will get an understanding of cause and effect of the boat, blade, and body working as one. Where: Paddle Park, Ediz Hook Time: SAT 9:00-11:00 $20

A LAZY PERSONS GUIDE TO EFFICIENT PADDLING: (Chris Mitchell) You know who you are. It amazes you that people would actually pay to go to a gym and have a personal trainer stand by telling you to work out. This is a light-hearted, but informative examination of the tricks to making your paddling more enjoyable and with less effort. The six hour class will look at all aspects of kayak touring starting with how to get your boat off the car (or better yet how to get someone to unload it for you), to getting it back on at the end of the day, and everything in between. We will cover subjects like how to easily get the boat to go straight or turn with the least amount of effort, or how to use the wind instead of it using you. Making waves work for us instead of against us. We will answer questions like; What paddle is right for me? Does this wet suit make my butt look big? Paddle leashes; to have or have not? Which is better, great rescue skills or great boat control skills? Is paddling something I can do as I get older? Do I need to wear a skirt, or will shorts work? How do I stay warm, or cool? While the class is designed for people that resist any inclination to exertion, it is open to all. There will be a short break halfway through so bring a lunch. Where: Check In Tent, Hollywood Beach Time: SAT 10:00-4:00 $60

DEEP WATER RESCUES: (Carol Asplund, Mike Kennedy) Capsizing happens! So be ready for it. Learn and practice rescues that actually work in cold, rough water where most capsizes occur. Learn tricks that make rescues faster and easier, how to protect yourself from injury (those boats are heavy!) and how to minimize heat loss while in the water. Bring your kayak, drysuit or wetsuit and get hands-on experience in a controlled environment. This clinic will focus on solo and group rescues that are proven lifesavers. Where: Paddle Park, Ediz Hook Time: SAT 11:00-1:00 $20

THE FORWARD STROKE: (Kathy Ruud) We all know how to paddle forward but are we doing it right? This on-water clinic will help you paddle faster and farther with greater efficiency. Practice exercises will help you adjust your stroke for easy touring or increased power for short distances. We will cover proper grip, stroke length, posture, use of torso, and principals of an efficient stroke. Where: Paddle Park, Ediz Hook Time: SAT 1:00-3:00 $20

USING YOUR PADDLE AS A RUDDER: (Rhonda Schwab) Once your boat is moving -forward or backward - and water is flowing over your paddle blade, you'll be amazed and delighted to know what little effort it now takes to steer. In this class we'll cover kayak hull design, the tilting the boat, and the effect of steering from the bow versus from the stern. Find out why so many experts don't use rudders or skegs! Where: Paddle Park, Ediz Hook Time: SAT 1:00-3:00 $20

ESKIMO ROLLING: (John Palmer) Learn the basic steps for this fun and important skill. If you do not get a roll in this clinic, we will send you home with strategies and insight to help teach yourself. Where: Red Lion Pool Time: SAT 2:30-4:00 $35

BRACING FOR SUPPORT: (Carol Asplund, Mike Kennedy) Discover how stable your kayak really is! Learn how a high and/or low angle brace can prevent that unwanted wet (cold) exit. Bracing is an essential technique using your paddle to stay upright and balanced. Where: Paddle Park, Ediz Hook Time: SAT 3:00-5:00 $20

BOAT CONTROL IN WIND: (Deb Volturno) If you're familiar with some of the strokes and rudders used for turning your kayak, we can now look at when to use them for maximum efficiency. In a word, you can encourage your boat to behave like a weathervane. If you have any plans of leaving the shoreline, this type of training can pay big dividends. Where: Paddle Park, Ediz Hook Time: SAT 3:00-5:00 $20

ESKIMO ROLLING: (Jory Kahn) Learn the basic steps for this fun and important skill. If you do not get a roll in this clinic, we will send you home with strategies and insight to help teach yourself. As paddlers in the sea, we spend time playing in one of the most dynamic environments on our planet, so it make good sense to practice, analyze and reflect on possible scenarios that the sea gods may present to us. Saying to yourself ‘What if this happens...’, and resolving a plan, is part of good wilderness planning. But why stop there? Get out there and put yourself in the picture!
