SEA KAYAKING - GETTING STARTED: (AJ Dauel) THIS IS A MUST FOR BEGINNER PADDLERS! Intended as an overview for novice paddlers, or for those who are just curious about what it takes to start kayaking safely and with confidence. This presentation goes over the various styles of sea kayaks and the advantages of each, and gives participants a good understanding of the essential pieces of paddling gear. Kayaking skills will also be discussed, and by the end of the presentation, participants will not only have gained a familiarity with the equipment involved in sea kayaking, but also with some of the ways it is used properly. This clinic is a discussion of the symptoms, prevention, self-help, treatment and other aspects of hypothermia/cold water immersion. This information may save your life. A SEA KAYAKERS GUIDE TO THE SAN JUANS: (Ken Campbell) Washington's San Juan Islands are well known as a sea kayaker's paradise. The rugged coastlines, the jewel-like islands set in beautiful azure waters and the rich variety of wildlife attract paddlers from around the world. This slide presentation showcases some of the best places to visit as well as provides information about the details that will make your stay in the islands more enjoyable. CAPSIZE RECOVERIES AND RESCUES: Which one is best for you? (Wayne Horodowich) (This is an on land lecture) Every sea kayaking book has at least one chapter devoted to rescues. Which method should you use in which situation? What is the difference between a capsize recovery and a rescue? How do you get help in an emergency? At the end of the presentation you will have the necessary information to answer these questions for yourself and how to best spend your practice time in the water. INS AND OUTS OF THE SURF ZONE (Wayne Horodowich) Going through the surf zone is a necessary part of most sea kayaking. However, for many people it produces anxiety and for good reason. Before entering the surf zone there are many questions that should be asked and answered. The presentation will focus on the techniques, strategies and information one should have to make the surf zone a comfortable and even an enjoyable experience. You will also learn a technique that can be practiced in clam water that will help you in the surf zone. Where: Red Lion Hotel Time: Sat. 11:00am-12:30pm $5

BEFUDDLED ABOUT BLADDER ISSUES?: (Kathy Ruud) For Women Only! Learn about FUDs (Female Urinary Devices) and how to use them to empty your bladder descretely and with confidence; even while in your kayak! KAYAKING WASHINGTON'S COAST: (Ken Campbell) From the quiet estuaries of the southwest to the booming surf of the roadless coast, Washington has one of the most varied and beautiful shorelines in the world. Long, sandy beaches and dark sea caves, standing rocks and hidden harbors: it's all here to explore. This presentation puts you in some of the most fascinating sea kayaking destinations in the state, and will provide you with the details you'll need to know to visit these spots on your own. LEARNING AND PRACTICING GOOD JUDGEMENT WHEN KAYAKING (Wayne Horodowich) (This is an on land lecture) How do you learn to make a quality decision in a kayaking emergency? Is your past experience enough to help you when faced with a problem? Do you have difficulties in making tough decisions? This presentation will examine the decision making process and the steps one can follow that will help towards quality decision making in the future. PADDLING THE BLACK CANYON OF THE COLORADO (Kirby Stevens) The opportunity to experience unbelievable canyons and thermal hot springs are only a hop, skip, and a jump away from the bright lights of Las Vegas. The Black Canyon of the Colorado River stretches from Hoover Dam to the north to Willows Beach Marina to the south (approximately 15 miles) or continue further to Cottonwood Marina. This is a very popular 2-3 day trip for those kayakers looking to soak in hot springs and paddle up to Hoover Dam. One also has the opportunity to explore everything from historic trails, suspension carts, riverside caves and thermal waterfalls not to mention the beautiful and steep red canyon walls as the meandering river winds it's way along. The presentation is an excellent opportunity to check out some of the ideas to consider before venturing on this trip. Where: Red Lion Hotel Time: Sat. 3:30-5:00pm $5

YOUR BOAT, BODY AND THE BLADE (Wayne Horodowich) (This is an on land lecture) Paddling a kayak is more than just taking strokes with your paddle. Kayaking is a true marriage of your body, boat and blade. All three must be working together during all aspects of kayaking. We will discuss body position and movements, boat positions and movements, and closely view how to properly use and manipulate your paddle to get the results you want when kayaking. The class is done in the lecture room so you can see what is happening under the water and inside the kayak when we look at your body, boat and blade working together. CHOOSING THE RIGHT PADDLE FOR YOU (TBA) Your body, your paddling style and the degree of efficiency you want all influence the type of paddle you use. This clinic will give you insights on how to make the best choice for you. We will discuss paddle length, blade size and shape, feathered vs. unfeathered, degree of feather, shaft size, weight, materials, bent or straight shaft, high or low angle, one/two and four piece paddles, spares, blisters, wrist rotation, tendonitis and drip rings. SEA KAYAKING BAJA MEXICO: (Kirby Stevens) With the cold of winter more and more paddlers begin planning trips to warmer locales. Baja is one of the most popular and accessible destinations that comes to mind becoming more accessible by air or vehicle than before. Baja has a variety of popular kayaking destinations providing ample opportunities to explore offshore islands and secluded beaches. This presentation provides lots of information and pictures covering most popular kayaking destinations in Baja such as Bahia de Los Angeles, Loreto, Bahia de Concepcion, La Paz and Magdalena Bay. We will also discuss some of the hazards of each area, what to see, rules and regulations pertaining to camping and paddling in Mexico plus much more. Where: Red Lion Hotel Time: Sat. 5:00-6:30pm $5

EXPLORING GLACIER BAY: (Gary Luhm) When Captain George Vancouver sailed into SE Alaska’s Icy Strait in 1794, it was choked with ice. To the north was a ten-mile wide wall of 400 ft high ice – the entrance to Glacier Bay. By the time John Muir arrived in 1879, the glaciers had retreated 48 miles. Plant secession, sea mammals, birds and bears followed the retreating ice to create an exquisite laboratory – and a dream kayak destination. Photographer Gary Luhm visited Glacier Bay National Park in three of the last six years, including two weeks in 2007. Travelling by kayak mothership, he has paddled many of the Parks inlets and bays. THE SURF ZONE: (Gary Korb, Dave Agnew, John Palmer) With any sort of wave action the zone where the land and ocean meet becomes an exciting place. This clinic is designed to improve boat handling skills necessary in the surf, and introduce landing techniques for a variety of environments. Learn how adjustments to basic strokes, trim, and edging can increase control in the surf. The instructors plan to cover the differences between surfing a sea kayak versus a surf specific boat, discuss safety issues, provide flat water exercises to foster surfing skills and share her enthusiasm for the surf zone. BASIC STROKES: (Les and Diane Uhrich) Learn some of the BCU 2 and 3-Star strokes that will improve your boat handling skills. Practicing and committing to these strokes will help you handle your kayak in various sea states. Where: Paddle Park, Ediz Hook Time: Sat. 9:00-11:00am $20

DEEP WATER RESCUES: (Brent Sund, Mike Kennedy) Capsizing happens! So be ready for it. Learn and practice rescues that actually work in cold, rough water where most capsizes occur. Learn tricks that make rescues faster and easier, how to protect yourself from injury (those boats are heavy!) and how to minimize heat loss while in the water. Bring your kayak, drysuit or wetsuit and get hands-on experience in a controlled environment. This clinic will focus on solo and group rescues that are proven lifesavers. TOWING SCENARIOS: (Les Uhrich, Diane Uhrich) What will you do when your paddling partner becomes incapacited? To many Coaches and trip leaders the tow belt may be the most important piece of safety gear you can carry. Without it you may find yourself reaching for your VHF radio or flares when a simple tow could have solved the problem. This clinic will be an introduction to several towing techniques using different scenarios on the water. Practice towing using a variety of methods and towing systems. Bring your own tow belt to this class or come and try one on for the first time. Where: Paddle Park, Ediz Hook Time: Sat. 11:00am-1:00pm $20

THE FORWARD STROKE: (Bill McKenzie, Rhonda Schwab) We all know how to paddle forward but are we doing it right? This on-water clinic will help you paddle faster and farther with greater efficiency. Practice exercises will help you adjust your stroke for easy touring or increased power for short distances. We will cover proper grip, stroke length, posture, use of torso, and principals of an efficient stroke. A KayakPro Speedstroke Ergometer (machine on the beach) will be used to help the class visualize the fundamentals of an effective stroke. Where: Paddle Park, Ediz Hook Time: Sat. 11:00am-1:00pm $20

USING YOUR PADDLE AS A RUDDER: (Carol Asplund, Mike Kennedy) Once your boat is moving -forward or backward - and water is flowing over your paddle blade, you'll be amazed and delighted to know what little effort it now takes to steer. In this class we'll cover kayak hull design, the tilting the boat, and the effect of steering from the bow versus from the stern. Find out why so many experts don't use rudders or skegs! ADVANCED STROKES: (Brent Sund, TBA) Now that you have a grasp of the basic strokes it's time to jump to the next level! Brent and his partner will be teaching you many of the intermediate and expert techniques such as the hang draw, draw on the move, bow and stern ruddering, and the low brace turn. This class is about moving the kayak around other than just using forward and reverse strokes. You will get an understanding of cause and effect of the boat, blade, and body working as one. ESKIMO ROLLING (1st session): (Rhonda Schwab, Bill McKenzie) Learn the basic steps for this fun and important skill. If you do not get a roll in this clinic, we will send you home with strategies and insight to help teach yourself. Required equipment for this clinic includes a sea or river kayak that fits snugly, bulkheads or flotation in the kayak, PFD, paddle, sprayskirt. Meet at the west pool entrance parking lot (opposite of main entrance) early enough to rinse your boat clean and change into what you will wear! Where: PA City Pool Time: Sat. 3:00-4:30pm $25

ESKIMO ROLLING (2nd session): (Rhonda Schwab, Bill McKenzie) Learn the basic steps for this fun and important skill. BOAT CONTROL IN WIND: (Carol Asplund, Dave Agnew) If you're familiar with some of the strokes and rudders used for turning your kayak, we can now look at when to use them for maximum efficiency. In a word, you can encourage your boat to behave like a weathervane. If you have any plans of leaving the shoreline, this type of training can pay big dividends. ON-WATER EMERGENCY SIGNALING AND COMMUNICATION: (Bill McKenzie) This clinic will cover the philosophy of on-water emergency signals. This includes attracting attention, helping people locate you, and the effectiveness of signaling devices for sea kayakers. Numerous devices and kits will be available for inspection as well as discussion on their use in an emergency situation. Possible pyrotechnic demonstration by the Coast Guard. BRITISH COLUMBIA SEA KAYAKING DESTINATIONS: (Kirby Stevens) An overview of Sea Kayaking destinations along the British Columbia, including waters around Vancouver Island, Coastal Mainland, Inside Passage and Queen Charlotte Islands. This presentation will provide information on popular launch sites, camping areas, points of interest and any hazards to watch out for. The coast of B.C. has a wide variety of waters that would appeal to paddlers from novice to expert. This is a great opportunity get an overview of a wide variety of areas along the British Columbia coast in one session to help assist you in planning your next trip. PACKING TIPS FOR EXPEDITION KAYAKING: (Ken Campbell) If you're planning an extended kayak adventure, this clinic will provide you with information to make your trip a success. What to take along and where to put it is the focus of the presentation and, just as importantly, we'll talk about some of the things to leave behind. This format is great for first-time touring kayakers, so bring your questions and we'll discuss the many options available in the world of kayak travel. REDUCE YOUR PADDLE PRINT: Low Impact Skills for Sea Kayakers: (Sarah Kreuger, Washington Water Trails Assoc. Outreach Director) Paddlers play and camp in sensitive environments, but you can reduce your
“paddle print” and help preserve the shoreline. Learn and discuss practical skills to handle human and food waste, build low-impact fires or use fire alternatives, and reduce your impact before the trip even begins.

THE ART OF TURNING : (Rhonda Schwab, Chris Smith) Learn the secrets of the maneuvering your kayak without the use of a rudder. This clinic will focus on developing efficient draws and sweeps that combined with an edged kayak will bring a true joy to you paddling. THE FORWARD STROKE: (Brent Sund, Kathy Ruud) We all know how to paddle forward but are we doing it right? This on-water clinic will help you paddle faster and farther with greater efficiency. Practice exercises will help you adjust your stroke for easy touring or increased power for short distances. TOWING SCENARIOS: (Carol Asplund, Mike Kennedy) What will you do when your paddling partner becomes incapacited? To many Coaches and trip leaders the tow belt may be the most important piece of safety gear you can carry. Without it you may find yourself reaching for your VHF radio or flares when a simple tow could have solved the problem. This clinic will be an introduction to several towing techniques using different scenarios on the water. Practice towing using a variety of methods and towing systems. ADVANCED STROKES: (Brent Sund, Kathy Ruud) Now that you have a grasp of the basic strokes it's time to jump to the next level! Brent and Ken will be teaching you many of the intermediate and expert techniques such as the hang draw, draw on the move, bow and stern ruddering, and the low brace turn. This class is about moving the kayak around other than just using forward and reverse strokes. You will get an understanding of cause and effect of the boat, blade, and body working as one. DEEP WATER RESCUES: (Les Uhrich, Diane Uhrich) Capsizing happens! So be ready for it. Learn and practice rescues that actually work in cold, rough water where most capsizes occur. Learn tricks that make rescues faster and easier, how to protect yourself from injury (those boats are heavy!) and how to minimize heat loss while in the water. Bring your kayak, drysuit or wetsuit and get hands-on experience in a controlled environment. This clinic will focus on solo and group rescues that are proven lifesavers.
